Can I get extra time in exams if I am Dyslexic?

Candidates undertaking an MCA written exam conducted by SQA/IAMI who have been diagnosed as dyslexic by either an educational psychologist or a Specialist Dyslexia Teacher may be allowed an extra 15 minutes for each hour of normal examination time.

The MCA will now also allow the use of a computer in a separate exam room, if your dyslexia assessment recommends this. Other aides such as tinted film etc are permitted.

Please note that a request for extra time must be made by the training provider, on a candidate’s behalf, direct to SQA/IAMI, at least 2 weeks prior to the exam date.

Master <200gt 2-part Oral Exams – ‘Part A’ of the new style Master <200 exam process is an online ‘written’ exam. It consists of 15 questions, each containing four test points which must be completed within 40 minutes. Students who have a dyslexia diagnosis are allowed extra time for this exam. In order to claim the extra time, candidates must provide evidence supporting this to exams@mcga.gov.uk in advance of sitting Part A.

The MCA have recently revised their dyslexia policy, and therefore If you have been assessed, and an increased exam time has been agreed, it will remain valid for all future exams. They state: “There is no expiration date and no requirement for renewal. It is accepted that dyslexia is lifelong, notwithstanding that with good teaching and strategies, attainment levels could change.”
