How Can Engineers With Previous Qualifications Apply For Exemption from SV Courses/Service Requirements?

.
For Engineers following the SV Engineering CoC pathway, there are several exemptions available, depending on your previous training & experience.

SV EOOW CoC-
Within the SV EOOW CoC requirements, there are 2 different ways to obtain exemptions, depending on your previous experience:
1- Apply For An Action Plan:
The ‘Alternative Route’ detailed in MSN 1904, in section 4.7 is based on you having relevant previous qualifications and/or work based apprenticeship (degree/HND/HNC or engineering apprenticeship NVQ level 3 or above) that may exempt you from undertaking certain courses or reduce your service requirements (this is similar to the Letter of Initial Assessment that was available to Engineers entering the Yacht CoC route).
You must apply to an MCA-approved training provider for an Action Plan (currently the only training provider offering this service is Warsash, but you can do your subsequent courses with any training provider).
The Action Plan will detail exactly how much service exemption you have been awarded. It may also exempt you from AEC 1 & 2 and Workshop Skills Training, if you have previous, relevant qualifications.
.
2- IAMI Assessment For Course Exemptions:
The ‘Experienced Seafarer Route’ detailed in MSN 1904, in section 4.4 is based on you already having some Engineering seatime under your belt, with no previous qualifications that would qualify you to apply under the Alternative Route.
However, if you feel that you have other relevant training and experience, you may apply to IAMI for exemptions from AEC 1 & 2 and Workshop Skills Training.
Email IAMI on exemption@iami.org.uk to access their exemption service, or to visit their exemptions website, click here.

SV Chief Engineer <3000GT & <9000kW CoC-
There are no sea service exemptions at this level, but if you hold a relevant engineering qualification (degree, HND/HNC or equivalent) you may be eligible for exemptions from the General Science I & II courses.
This exemption is also assessed and awarded by IAMI – email IAMI on exemption@iami.org.uk to access their exemption service, or to visit their exemptions website, click here.

Note for candidates that have completed an MCA approved training course (such as a cadetship) and have obtained an HNC in Marine Engineering:
Rather than following the advice above, the MCA will assess your eligibility for exemptions.
You will need to send them your qualification, including the transcript of modules that were used to gain the HNC. The MCA will then compare them to their mapping documents to see if you are exempt from any exams.
HNCs can vary in modules, and this unfortunately means that not all will cover the exam syllabi to the right level and therefore you may still need to sit some courses and exams.
.
Note for holders of qualifications gained outside the UK:
For any qualification gained outside the UK, you must obtain an ENIC letter confirming comparable standard of your qualification to a UK equivalent.
HND/Advanced Diploma, HNC/Advanced Certificate and engineering apprenticeships will only be accepted if gained from the UK or an EU state.
